The recent illegal immigrant caravans demanding entry into the United States have opened a contentious debate over America’s birthright citizenship policy.

Indeed, one illegal alien who entered America from the latest caravan has already given birth to a baby who is now a United States citizen.

Advocates for illegal aliens cite the 14^th Amendment and claim it is ‘un-American’ to deny citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants who have been born in America.

Critics -- including President Trump himself -- feel that illegal aliens who break our laws should not be rewarded by becoming the parent of a U.S. citizen. They point out the fact that the author of the 14th Amendment’s citizenship clause -- Senator Jacob M. Howard of Michigan -- explicitly stated on the record in the Senate that the 14^th Amendment does not confer citizenship to “persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors, or foreign ministers[...]”. Additionally, a recent report from the Center for Immigration Studies found that more than half of immigrants in America receive welfare in one form or another, far surpassing the percentage of native-born Americans.
