The recent illegal immigrant caravans demanding entry into the United States have opened a contentious debate over America’s birthright citizenship policy.

Indeed, one illegal alien who entered America from the latest caravan has already given birth to a baby who is now a United States citizen.

Advocates for illegal aliens cite the 14th Amendment and claim it is ‘un-American’ to deny citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants who have been born in America.

Critics -- including President Trump himself -- feel that illegal aliens who break our laws should not be rewarded by becoming the parent of a U.S. citizen. They point out the fact that the author of the 14th Amendment’s citizenship clause -- Senator Jacob M. Howard of Michigan -- explicitly stated on the record in the Senate that the 14th Amendment does not confer citizenship to “persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors, or foreign ministers[...]”. Additionally, a recent report from the Center for Immigration Studies found that more than half of immigrants in America receive welfare in one form or another, far surpassing the percentage of native-born Americans.
