Alabama’s U.S. Senate special election to serve the remainder of the term vacated by now-Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been roiled by claims of sexual harassment against Republican nominee Judge Roy Moore.

Widely recognized for his traditional Christian beliefs, Judge Moore was twice removed as the Chief Justice of Alabama’s Supreme Court; first in 2003 for refusing to remove a monument to the Ten Commandments from state property, and again in 2016 for ordering Alabama’s courts to ignore the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges which legalized same-sex marriages.

First published in the Washington Post, the accusations cover the time period after Judge Moore’s military service in Vietnam. He has strongly denied any wrongdoing.

Democrats, Establishment Republicans, and many in the media have called for Judge Moore to step aside as a result of the accusations. However, many conservatives and supporters of Judge Moore have denounced the accusations as politically-motivated falsehoods designed to sabotage Judge Moore’s strongly anti-Establishment, outsider campaign for Senate.
